Acceptable Use Policy

Sitelens is a crawler. Use it the way you’d want others to treat your own website.

01

Yours or authorised
Audit sites you own or are authorised to audit.

02

Robots.txt matters
Turn it off only for sites you’re authorised to audit.

03

No attacks, no scraping
No overloading, security probing or data harvesting.

04

Owners can say no
Block SitelensBot in robots.txt or write to abuse@sitelens.dev.

01 —Why this policy exists

Every audit you run sends real requests to a real website, under our crawler’s name. This policy keeps that fair to the people who run those websites. It forms part of our Terms of Service, and applies to everyone using Sitelens, including guests using the single-page checker.

02 —Audit only what you’re authorised to audit

Respecting robots.txt is on by default. You may turn it off only for sites you own or are authorised to audit, never to reach pages a third-party site owner has asked crawlers to avoid.

If we ask, you must be able to show that you are authorised to audit a site in your account.

03 —What you must not do

Harm to websites

  • Use Sitelens to overload, slow down or disrupt a website, for example by repeatedly auditing it or splitting crawls across accounts.
  • Use Sitelens as part of any attack, including denial-of-service attempts.
  • Probe a website’s security, look for vulnerabilities, or try to reach non-public pages, admin areas or private network addresses.

Data harvesting

  • Use Sitelens to scrape websites for data harvesting, such as collecting email addresses, names, prices or other content to reuse elsewhere.
  • Use audit results to build datasets about people.

Abuse of the Service

  • Get around plan limits, rate limits or crawler safeguards, including by creating multiple accounts.
  • Interfere with Sitelens itself, attempt unauthorised access to it, or reverse engineer it.
  • Resell access to Sitelens, or present SitelensBot’s traffic as coming from someone else.
  • Use Sitelens for anything unlawful, or in a way that infringes other people’s rights.

04 —Safeguards built into the crawler

Regardless of your settings, SitelensBot:

  • identifies itself openly as SitelensBot, with a link to its information page;
  • fetches only public pages over HTTP(S), with around 5 concurrent requests;
  • blocks private and internal network addresses;
  • does not submit forms, log in, or execute JavaScript;
  • stops at your plan’s page limit.

05 —For website owners

If SitelensBot is visiting your site and you don’t want it to, you can block or limit it with robots.txt. Examples are on About SitelensBot.

To report misuse, email abuse@sitelens.dev or use our report form. Include your domain, roughly when the requests happened, and what you saw. We take reports seriously and respond as quickly as we can.

06 —Enforcement

If we believe this policy has been broken, or a website is being harmed, we may, with or without notice:

  • throttle, pause or stop a crawl;
  • block crawling of a particular site for all users;
  • remove a site from an account;
  • suspend or close the account involved, without refund where the breach is serious; and
  • cooperate with site owners and law enforcement where appropriate.
